Sunken oil mats: A biomarker-based investigation

  • Mais info about Sunken oil mats: A biomarker-based investigation

Sunken oil mats (SOMs) pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems, yet their long-term fate and weathering processes remain poorly understood. This study investigates the degradation of biomarkers in a SOM sample collected from the Brazilian coast following the long-lasting 2019 oil spill. The SOM clearly distinguished from spilt oil and were attributed to tanker-washing residues.

Abstract

Temporal analysis of emissivity variation of mineral substrates impregnated with hydrocarbons: Significance for oil exploration and environmental pollution monitoring

  • Mais info about Temporal analysis of emissivity variation of mineral substrates impregnated with hydrocarbons: Significance for oil exploration and environmental pollution monitoring

The high risk of environmental contamination posed by the use of petroleum hydrocarbons (HCs) necessitates technologies for detecting leaks. The effectiveness of sensors operating in near infrared (NIR) and short wave (SWIR) have already been demonstrated for this purpose. However, the applicability of thermal data (TIR) remains largely unexplored. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of TIR data for the detection and monitoring of soils contaminated with HCs, by tracking changes in the emissivity of samples in the post-contamination period.

Abstract

The origin and fate of organic carbon in graphite–manganese bearing rocks and implications for the Lomagundi–Jatuli Event

  • Mais info about The origin and fate of organic carbon in graphite–manganese bearing rocks and implications for the Lomagundi–Jatuli Event

Our study helps to unravel the complexity of the Lomagundi–Jatuli event, the largest and longest positive carbon isotope excursion ever recorded on the Earth’s surface, by providing a unique view of Paleoproterozoic graphitic rocks from the Borborema province of Northeastern Brazil. Through detailed mineralogical, textural, chemical and isotopic analyses, we bring a new perspective that provide support to elevated primary productivity and large-scale organic carbon burial during the Lomagundi–Jatuli event.

ABSTRACT

U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic evolution of ∼3.6 Ga remnants in NE Brazil – Implications on Eo-Paleoarchean global crustal evolution

  • Mais info about U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic evolution of ∼3.6 Ga remnants in NE Brazil – Implications on Eo-Paleoarchean global crustal evolution

Precambrian terrains preserving rocks older than 3.5 Ga contain an essential record of the crustal evolution of the primitive Earth. In this study, we investigated Eo-Paleoarchean rocks from the northern São Francisco Craton (NSFC) and the Borborema Province in northeastern Brazil to contribute to a more complete global isotopic record of this pivotal time in Earth's history. Zircon U-Pb ages along with zircon Hf isotope compositions were obtained for migmatitic gneiss complexes in both terrains.

Abstract

Uranium anomaly in groundwater of the hard rock aquifer system in southeast Brazil

  • Mais info about Uranium anomaly in groundwater of the hard rock aquifer system in southeast Brazil

This study presents a hydrogeological characterization that fills knowledge gaps in an area where a complex geological scenario connects two fractured (granite/metamorphic rocks and diabase) and one porous (sedimentary rocks) aquifer systems. Previous groundwater studies from the four local deep supply wells suggested the sedimentary aquifer as the source of uranium (∼60 μg/L) in one of the wells. Despite the water extraction interruption from this well, this finding needed to be supported by evidence provided by the geological and structural characteristics of the aquifers.

Visible-Near Infrared–Short-Wave Infrared Spectroscopy and Mineral Mapping of Hydrothermal Alteration Zones at the Brejuí W-Mo Skarn Deposit, Seridó Mobile Belt, Borborema Province, Brazil

  • Mais info about Visible-Near Infrared–Short-Wave Infrared Spectroscopy and Mineral Mapping of Hydrothermal Alteration Zones at the Brejuí W-Mo Skarn Deposit, Seridó Mobile Belt, Borborema Province, Brazil

The Brejuí W-Mo skarn deposit is the main scheelite deposit of the Seridó tungsten province (Borborema province, NE Brazil). It constitutes the largest Brazilian W ore reserve. The orebodies are hosted in the metasedimentary Jucurutu Formation of the Seridó Group (650–610 Ma), close to the margin of the Neoproterozoic Acari pluton (Brasiliano orogeny). Skarns include prograde and retrograde mineral assemblages. Infrared spectral analysis shows that the skarns mainly reflect retrograde mineral assemblages, formed in three different hydrothermal alteration stages with overprinting.
